மாப்பசான்

கடந்து போன கிருஸ்துமஸ் விடுமுறைக்கு படிப்பதற்காக நூலகத்திலிருந்து எடுத்து வந்த புத்தகம் Guy de Maupassant எழுதிய Bel Ami என்கிற நாவல். மாப்பசான் சிறுகதை எழுதாளர்களில் மிக முக்கியமானவராக கருதப்படுபவர். பல எழுத்தாளர்க்ளுக்கு இவருடைய தாக்கம் உண்டு. உதாரணத்துக்கு இவருடை The Necklace என்னும் சிறுகதை பிரசித்தி பெற்றது. மிக தீவிரமான கதையை கூட மிக மிக சுவாரசியமாக் சொல்லக்கூடிய ஆற்றல் மாப்பசானுக்கு இருந்த்தாலேயே இவர் வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில் வாசகர்கள் இவருடைய கதையையோ இல்லை தொடரையோ படிக்க அடுத்த இதழோ இல்லை செய்தித்தாளுக்கோ மிக ஆவலுடன் காத்திருந்து வாசித்தனர். ஆறு நாவல்கள் எழுதியிருக்கிறார்.

Bel Ami இவர் எழுதிய இரண்டாவது நாவல். ஒரு சாமானிய மாஜி ரானுவ ஊழியனான ஜார்ஜஸ் டு-ராய் என்பவன் சமூகத்தில் ஊடுருவி வியாபித்து இருக்கும் ஊழல், பெண்ணாசை, அரசியல் அதிகாரம் இவற்றை தனக்கு சாதாகமாக உபயோகித்துக்கொண்டு ஒரு பத்திரிக்கையின் கீழ் மட்ட ரிப்போர்டராக சேர்ந்து மிக உயர்ந்த அந்தஸ்த்க்கு உயரும் கதையை மிக விறுவிறுப்புடன் சொல்லும் கதை. படித்து முடித்த பின் இதை ஏன் யாரும் இன்னும் படமாக எடுக்கவில்லை என்று தேடியபோது, ஹாலிவுட்டில் இந்த நாவலை படமாக்குவதற்காக பூசை போட்டு 2011ல் வெளிவர இருக்கிறது. அந்த நாவலில் சில துளிகள்:

How nice to be able to use religion as an in-any-event. If its fine (weather), you've got a walking stick, if the Sun's shining a sunshade; if its raining an umbrella and if you stay at home, you leave it in hall

Life is a slope. As long as you're going up you're looking towards the top and you feel happy; but when you reach it suddenly you can see the road going downhill and death at the end of it all. It's slow going up but quick going down

You can keep copies of statues, moulds which can reproduce the same objects but my body, my face, my thoughts, my desire will never return. And yet there'll be millions and millions of people with a few square inches of face, a nose, eyes, forehead, cheeks, a mouth like me and a soul too, yet I shall never come back, nothing recognizably me will ever reappear amongst all those countless different creatures, indefinably different even though more or less the same.

Through too much thought, we've created a discrepancy between our overdeveloped intelligence and the unchanging conditions of our life. An average man, unless he is actually affected by personal disaster he's quite happy and doesn't suffer from all the unhappiness of others. Animals don't feel it either.

அட மாப்பசான் அப்படி என்ன பெரிய எழுத்தாளர் என்று தோன்றினால் டால்ஸ்டாய் இவரைப் பற்றி எழுதிய கட்டுரையை வாசித்து பார்க்கவும்.

கொசுறு: ஈஃபில் கோபுரம் கட்டப்பட்டபோது பல பாரீஸ் மக்கள் அதை விரும்பவில்லை, மாப்பசானும் அதில் ஒருவர். ஆனால் அவர் அடிக்கடி அந்த கோபுரத்தில் இருந்த ரெஸ்டராண்டிலேயே உண்பது வழக்கம். ஈஃபில் கோபுரம் பிடிக்கவில்லை என்னும்போது ஏன் அங்கே போய் சாப்பிடுகிறாய் என்று கேட்ட போது, அங்கே உட்கார்ந்தால்தான் இந்த கோபுரம் கண்ணில் படாமல் இருக்கும் என்பாராம.
